MADEIRA SURF MAP
Madeira is often referred to as the "Pearl of the Atlantic" due to its stunning beauty, lush landscapes, and unique position in the ocean. The island is a hotspot for nature lovers, offering everything from dramatic coastlines to verdant mountains. But when it comes to big waves, Madeira also stands out as a premier surf destination, especially for more advanced surfers who seek the thrill of massive swells.
Big Wave Surfing in Madeira
The island's rugged coastline is exposed to the full force of the North Atlantic, making it a prime location for some incredible big wave surfing. The most famous spot for large waves is Jardim do Mar, a picturesque village with some of the most powerful waves in the region. There’s also Paul do Mar and Ponta do Sol, where big waves can form during the winter months.
The waves here can reach up to 20-30 feet during peak season, and the surrounding cliffs make for an impressive backdrop while you're out on the water. It’s definitely not for beginners, as the waves can be treacherous, but for experienced surfers, it’s a thrilling and challenging environment.
Nature's Playground
Apart from surfing, Madeira's landscape is nothing short of spectacular. The volcanic origin of the island has given rise to dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and dense forests. Hikers love the Levada walks, a network of irrigation channels that wind through the island's lush interior. The Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is especially noteworthy for its rich biodiversity.
