Surfing at Namotu:
Namotu Left: This is one of the most famous waves on the island. It’s a long left-hand reef break that offers a perfect barrel when it’s firing. This wave is suitable for all skill levels, but when the conditions are right, it can be challenging and rewarding for advanced surfers.
Swimming Pool: Another renowned spot near the island, which is a clean, barreling right-hander, known for its crystal-clear waters and perfect form.
Tavarua: Just across from Namotu is Tavarua Island, home to the legendary Cloudbreak, one of the most famous and challenging waves in the world. Cloudbreak is a heavy, fast left-hand reef break, attracting top-level surfers from all over the globe. It’s not far from Namotu and definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area.
The surf season in Fiji generally peaks during the southern hemisphere winter months (May to October), with the best conditions for big waves being from June to August. During this time, Namotu attracts surfers from all over the world, so you’ll often find a vibrant, surf-focused community on the island.
Fishing around Namotu:
Fiji is also a fantastic destination for fishing enthusiasts, offering both game fishing and reef fishing.
Big Game Fishing: You can fish for tuna, marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi (dorado) in the deep blue waters around Namotu. The waters off the island are rich in marine life, making it a great spot for an exciting day of fishing.
Reef Fishing: If you're into a more relaxed day of fishing, the surrounding reefs are great for catching a variety of species like snapper, grouper, and trevally.
Catch & Release: Many of the fishing guides here practice catch-and-release to ensure the sustainability of the fish populations, so you can enjoy the sport while also helping preserve the marine ecosystem.
If you're lucky, you can also try surf-and-fish combo tours, where you can catch some waves and then go fishing on the same day. It’s an epic mix of adventure and relaxation!
